How to find a pattern maker online: what to send, what you get, what it costs

A pattern maker turns your drawing into a graded industrial pattern a factory can cut from. To hire one online you need three things: a complete brief (front view, back view, fabric, fit, sizes), a price agreed up front, and a clearly defined deliverable. On Patterngain, prices start at €70 for a t-shirt and €120 for a hoodie, tech pack included, delivered in 5 to 14 days depending on complexity.

Pattern maker, pattern cutter, “modéliste”: who are we talking about?

Same job, different names. The pattern maker drafts the pattern: every flat piece (front, back, sleeves, facings…) with seam allowances, grainline and notches, first in a base size, then graded into the other sizes.

Without a pattern, a factory cannot cut anything: a drawing or an AI image shows a look, not a construction.

Where can you find a pattern maker online?

Three routes, at very different prices (prices observed in October 2026, indicative):

RoutePrice rangeWhat to check
Generalist freelance marketplaces~€30–180Tech pack is often extra; the seller is not verified; the file format is not guaranteed
Independent pattern maker in Western Europe~€150–600 + €20–40 per size, tech pack €100–250 extraAvailability, quotes to negotiate, variable lead times
A platform dedicated to pattern making, such as Patterngainfrom €70 (basic) to from €350 (technical), +€20 per size, tech pack includedYou set the price before posting; the pattern maker who accepts is a registered professional; deliverables and lead times are written down

Whatever the route, ask before paying: the delivery format (printable PDF and a DXF-AAMA or PLT factory file), the number of graded sizes, the number of revisions included, and who owns the pattern at the end.

What should you send a pattern maker? The 10-point brief

A good brief saves rounds of questions. Send:

  1. A front view and a back view of the garment (drawing, sketch or AI-generated image). Both are required on Patterngain.
  2. The fabric: jersey, fleece, denim, poplin, knit… and its weight if you know it.
  3. The fit: slim, straight, oversized; the length you want.
  4. The base size (often M or EU 38) and the list of sizes to grade.
  5. A measurement chart or a reference garment that fits you.
  6. Construction details: pockets, closures, hood, ribbing, topstitching.
  7. Finishes: hems, visible or hidden seams, lining.
  8. The use: everyday wear, sportswear, lingerie, structured piece (it changes the category and the price).
  9. Your deadline: it must fit the grid (5 to 14 days after acceptance).
  10. Your price, at or above the category floor.

The 10 most useful measurements when you have a reference garment: chest, waist, hip, back length (nape to hem), shoulder width, sleeve length, bicep, cuff, neck opening, and inseam for bottoms. Measure the garment flat and say so.

What do you get at the end?

On Patterngain the price always includes:

  • the graded pattern as a printable PDF (A0 or A4);
  • the DXF-AAMA or PLT factory file, the one cutting tables read;
  • a validation render;
  • the full tech pack (measurements, bill of materials, flat sketch).

You get 3 revisions included, each with a written reason, and a 30-day construction guarantee after validation: a construction defect (pieces that do not match, wrong grading) is fixed for free, outside the revision quota. The pattern and tech pack belong to you from validation.

How much does it cost and how long does it take?

CategoryExamplesFloor priceLead time after acceptance
Basict-shirt, tank top, shortsfrom €705 days
Standardhoodie, sweatshirt, trousers, skirtfrom €1207 days
Complexjacket, coat, structured dressfrom €25010 days
Technicallingerie, corset, sportswear, pleatsfrom €35014 days

Each size beyond the base size adds €20. Example: a hoodie graded in 5 sizes ≈ 120 + 4 × 20 = €200, tech pack included. The pattern cost calculator gives the figure for your garment.

How does payment work?

When you post the job, the amount is only reserved on your card. It is charged only when a pattern maker accepts, then held in escrow until you validate. If nobody takes it within 6 days, nothing is charged.

The job goes out to every pattern maker; verified pattern makers get a 2-hour priority window, then the first qualified professional who accepts takes it.

Frequently asked questions

Will a pattern maker accept an AI-generated image?
Yes, as long as it is original and not a copy of an existing garment. Prepare it with consistent front and back views: see the guide “From AI image to pattern”.
Do I need a tech pack before contacting a pattern maker?
No. On Patterngain the tech pack is produced by the pattern maker and included in the price. If you want to prepare your own, the free tech pack template (.xlsx, no email or account) gives you the structure.
How many sizes should I ask for at first?
Start with the base size plus 2 to 4 sizes around it (for example S to XL). Each size adds €20; you can grade more later.
What if the pattern is not right?
You have 3 revisions included, each with a written reason. If a disagreement persists, the team arbitrates: continue, refund or split. A construction defect is covered for 30 days after validation.
Can I then get the garment made?
Yes: small-batch production is ordered on the same platform from partner workshops, which reply with comparable quotes and receive the production file (pattern + tech pack) once the order is confirmed. No workshop sees it before.
Which languages and currencies?
The interface is available in 40 languages and prices are shown in more than 160 currencies; payment is collected in euros.
